Can you tailor a suit down one size?
The rule of thumb is that you can go down two sizes at a maximum, but a suit jacket or blazer only one size too large is a safer option. The problem is always that jackets that are too large can also be too large in the shoulders, which is a more challenging thing to alter.
Is it easy to alter a suit jacket?
The waist of a suit jacket has many seams at the sides and back that can be easily altered. If you are happy with the shoulder and armhole fit but the waist feels too big or too small, no problem! This is the most common and easiest suit jacket alteration to get a like-custom fit without spending a fortune.
How much does it cost to shorten a suit jacket?
Depending on whether the jacket sleeve can be taken up/down from the end or from the shoulder, adjusting the sleeve length can be cheap or expensive. Expect to pay from $30 to $60 to adjust from the end and in the range of $100 to adjust from the shoulder.
How much does it cost to get a suit jacket tailored?
It costs anywhere from $40-$400 for a suit to get tailored. This is a big range because it depends on how much tailoring is required and who you go to for tailoring. The local tailor will be a lot more affordable than a special, high-end tailor.
Can jackets be altered?
Yes, they can be altered. We do it all winter long. It’s a very time consuming, labor intensive job, but any experienced tailor can do this. And it’s far less expensive than replacing expensive cold weather clothing if you have lost significant weight, or found a bargain on coat that’s too large for you.
