Essential Oils for Deep & Restful Sleep

Essential oils are such a big part of my bedtime routine, I don’t remember how I used to go to bed without them. It’s so easy to fall into a deep, restful sleep with the assistance of these beautiful plant essences.
Wake up feeling energized and well-rested with help of these 6 sleepy time essential oils:

  • LavenderIMG_2835
  • Roman Chamomile (or German Chamomile)
  • Cedarwood
  • Vetiver
  • Frankincense
  • Stress away

Keep reading to learn about the calming effects of each of these oils + scroll to the bottom for two essential oil blends for a good night’s sleep!

How to use essential oils before bed:

  • Apply neat (undiluted) to the bottoms of feet, chest, wrists, neck and spine
  • Apply 3-4 drops of your favourite calming essential oil to the palms of your hands, cup around your nose and mouth and inhale deeply for a couple of minutes before laying down in bed. Try doing this while meditating, or listening to relaxing music.
  • Make a roller bottle blend such as the Liquid Sleep & Tranquil recipes below, and apply topically
  • Diffuse 10 drops of lavender +  5 drops cedarwood + 2 drops frankincense at bedtime – you can leave the diffuser running if you have one that automatically turns off when it is empty. Experiment with your favourite blends and ratios to diffuse.
  • Alternately, diffuse 10 drops lavender + 5 drops roman chamomile.

Lavender essential oil can be used topically or diffused to act as a nerve and calmative, which enhances relaxation. Also helps to relieve headaches!

To use as part of your evening routine, rub lavender on the bottom of your feet before bed, or spritz your pillow with distilled water and Lavender mixed in a spray bottle.

Roman Chamomile

Chamomile is (of course) a very well known herbal remedy for treating insomnia and nervous tension. Roman chamomile in particular is an excellent relaxant. Diffuse or apply topically to encourage feelings of empowerment, confidence, and relaxation.


Cedarwood essential oil includes the key constituents alpha-himachalene, beta-
himachalene, gamma-himachalene, and delta-himachalene. Cedarwood is a must- have for deep sleep, as it helps to stimulate the pineal gland, which releases melatonin. Can be used topically or diffused to act as a nerve and calmative, which enhances relaxation.
Also helps to reduce symptoms of cough or cold.


Vetiver is very grounding, calming, and stabilizing. It has a deep, earthy scent, and is a very thick essential oil. I tried for a really long time to get it to drop out of the bottle with the oil stopper in place. After doing a little bit of research I realized that since it’s actually as thick as syrup – some people will use a roller filament attachment to easily get it out of the bottle. Also, if you heat up the oil slightly by rubbing it between your hands, it should make it slightly more fluent – enough that
you can get a drop out of the bottle! I found that the easiest way to use my vetiver, is to take the oil stopper off of the bottle (the little part that stops the oil from gushing out when you take the lid off), and add it to my liquid sleep roller bottle.


Frankincense is steam distilled from the gum/ resin of the Frankincense tree – Boswellia carter, grown in Somalia. Used in spiritual practices for thousands of years, frankincense is well known for it’s relaxing properties. Can be used to increase spiritual awareness during meditation, and uplift spirits.

Stress away is a blend of copaiba, lime, vanilla, cedarwood, lavender and ocotea essential oils. It can be used topically or diffused to act as a nervine and calmative.

Liquid Sleep Roll-on

This is a blend of vetiver, lavender, cedarwood, and frankincense. Add the following essential oils + fractionated coconut oil to a 10 ml roller bottle:

Tranquil Roll-On

Tranquil is a blend made by Young Living containing lavender, cedarwood and roman chamomile. It is actually very similar to the liquid sleep blend, with the lavender and cedarwood – but it also contains roman chamomile. When I used up all of Young Living tranquil roll-on, I decided do buy roman chamomile, and re-fill my roller bottle myself. All you will need is:

  • 15 drops lavender
  • 15 drops cedarwood
  • 10 drops roman chamomile

The roman chamomile adds a very light floral scent to this blend, and it is absolutely perfect to apply before bed.

    1. Hi Angie, The closest substitute for a good sleepy time oil would be cedarwood. As I mentioned above, cedarwood is a must-have for any essential oil sleep blends, as it helps to stimulate the pineal gland, which releases melatonin. 🙂
