DIY All Purpose Cleaner

Well apparently it is spring here in Canada, and although the snow and freezing rain have been holding on… I’ve been bitten by the spring cleaning bug! This year is a little bit different than before, because I’ve started to pay more attention to what is in my personal care and home cleaning products.

I recently downloaded an app on my iphone called Think Dirty. With this app you can scan all your personal care/ cleaning products, learn the ingredients in them, and find out if they are full of toxic chemicals or not! It will rate your products on a scale of 1-10, and help you “shop clean” so that you can avoid toxins in your home.

I scanned every product in our house that I could think of, and I was surprised to find that some products that I thought were 100% safe and eco friendly, were actually full of toxic chemicals! This was shocking to me, because we are a family that makes a huge effort to shop for biodegradable, eco-friendly cleaning supplies! It is so terrible how misleading the advertising and branding on some of these products can be. Many of these chemicals are carcinogens, and can affect the quality of your breathing as well. I’m especially sensitive to this, because I have seasonal allergies that induce coughing asthma in the spring and summer. Chemicals and artificial scents just make this sort of thing worse, and it gets hard to breathe when your lungs are agitated by harsh chemicals floating around in the air!

Don’t we all want to live in a chemical free home?

Needless to say, my new favourite all purpose cleaning product is essential oils, alongside Young Living Thieves all purpose cleaner. Thieves is a blend of clove, cinnamon bark, rosemary, lemon, and eucalyptus essential oils. This blend is based on a historical account of four thieves in France who protected themselves from the black plague with clove, rosemary and other aromatics while robbing victims of this killer disease. This blend has been tested and proved to be highly effective against airborne bacteria! Plus, my favourite part – it smells like a cloud of chai latté and lemony, spicy goodness. This smell actually makes me want to clean, its so good!

I’m sharing with you today some of my favourite ways to use Thieves, and I’d like to invite you to consider what sort of products you use in your home, and how they may be affecting your health!
